Lucked into some beautiful light late Friday afternoon as we were making our way to the Tukino skifield.
5 of 7
This is a job I really enjoyed, photographing current students at Victoria University. Here’s 5 of the 7 portraits which are being used in bus shelters and billboards around Wellington currently.
Robert Martin, NZ’s nominee for the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
I photographed Robert yesterday for a document nominating him as he seeks a place on the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. If he’s successful he would be the first person with a learning disability to sit on this committee. Here’s a link to a short video (not shot by me) with his inspiring story.
Snakes and Ladders
The warped geometry of an aged playground. The structures gone but the slide still retains a hopeful shine.
Vestiges of recent history and all those quotes about the passing of time
Bits scattered across the Wairarapa coast. The fireplace, like a lone proud sentinel, a reminder of prior endeavour and graft.
Whakapapa and Tokannu, Cold and Hot
After a long walk dragging your offspring around the mountain there’s nothing better than heading to the hot pools at Tokannu. And then spotting the church and madonna across the road on your way out.
Beach Forest
Here are a couple of photographs from a shoot last week with talented poet Morgan Bach for Victoria University Press.
Kaiwharawhara Stream
Last year I helped artist Kedron Parker with her Kumototo Stream project and she now has a new work in conjunction with artist Bruce McNaught which also explores our connection with fresh water.
This got me thinking about a project I did way back in 1998. I photographically explored the Kaiwharawhara Stream using artificial lighting in daylight to give the imagery an altered and slightly hyper real look. Heres some of what I wrote at the time:
….I learnt that the head waters of the stream were mined for gold by early settlers of Wellington 140 years ago. Then it was dammed to provide freshwater for the growing city. In another section further downstream, the stream is piped underneath an old rubbish dump for the city. Currently, the upper valley area is being restored to a pre- European state. It is being transformed over time to create a wildlife sanctuary.
What became clear to me whilst I was working on this project, was that the effects of man, for better or worse, are evidenced along the entire length of the stream. Whether we dictate its direction for practical and commercial reasons, or cultivate it’s beauty for our pleasure, the stream has had to contend with constant human interference…..
