All aboard please, photographs by Grant Maiden, Wellington, New Zealand.

This is an ongoing series photographed over the last few months for Victoria University using current students for their handbook guides for prospective students. The layout involved positioning the student on the left side of the page and the right being left free to overlay text.

Spent an enjoyable morning photographing writer Bill Manhire for Victoria University Press recently. A wet day had kept us inside- but it made for nice soft window light filtering into his Wellington apartment.

Bit of a shabby old day that one in Marokopa, a small coastal settlement up in the Waitomo district. Occasional pelting rain breaking up the persistent low cloud. Felt like everyone had packed up and left.

It must be my current immersion in the third series of the Danish crime series “The Killing” that attracted me to these containers in the first instance. They are stacked (like that other great Danish invention: Lego) along the route to Sumner beach protecting the road from the unstable cliff face behind.

I don’t often shoot portraits without some kind of lighting, but conditions this day forced us to use what was available. In between shots, poet Claire Orchard and I we were hunkering under umbrellas to keep the persistent rain at bay.
